Abstract

16,340. Nevill, H. Aug. 11. Forging; c o r r u - gating. - Relates to means for forming grooves or flutes in the internal surface of ductile metal or other tubes, to form longitudinal ball races for ball bearings or keyways in the tubes. The drift tool a, Fig. 1, is provided with the roller c, or rollers, journalled in a slot in the shank of the tool and projecting from the shank to the extent of the groove to be formed. An antifriction plate d or roller is provided on the side opposite to the acting side of the roller c. The tube to be grooved is placed in a matrix bolster, such as is described in Specification No. 7451, A.D. 1899, and the drift tool is driven or pressed by a suitable power or hydraulic press. A drift die may be used to finish the grooves.
