14,718. Inwood, C. July 17. Brakes, back-pedalling, for free-wheel bicycles &c. The crank axle carries a disc A, Fig. 1, which, when driven backwards, causes a roller B to travel along a groove in a lever C, which is thus forced away from the disc. The lever C is connected by a rod to a block F, Fig. 3, working on a guide and connected by links g to a bar G carrying a brake shoe H. When the wheel R is turning forwards, the bar G is brought into contact with the stop S and acts as a rigid brake, but if the bicycle is wheeled backward the rotation of the wheels raises the bar on its links so that the brake is inoperative.
