The pedals are mounted on treadle-levers e pivoted to the rear fork a and carrying spring pawls d mounted on inwardly-projecting pins. The pawls actuate ratchet-wheels mounted on an axle geared with the rear wheel by a chain &c. Alternate action of the pedals is ensured by connecting them by a chain i passing over a pulley k. Fig. 3 is a left-hand view of the gear, showing the brake mechanism. The brake shoe o, acting on a drum u, is carried on a bent lever o<1> fitted with an adjusting-screw l. When the treadle-lever e is considerably depressed, its rear end comes in contact with the screw l and applies the brake.
