Abstract
13,639. Rhodes, W. July 1. Carding - engines.- The flats are stripped and cleaned by a cardcovered roller c and a brush d, which a r e rotated upon their respective axles and also about an axle a. The roller c is stripped by a rotary comb k, which is cleaned by hand at intervals. The parts rotate in the directions indicated by the arrows. The axles of the roller, brush, and comb are carried by discs b<x> on the rotating axle a, and are rotated by reason of spur-wheels thereon gearing with a fixed spur-wheel. In the case of the axle of the comb k, a loose wheel and pinion carried by the discs b<x> are arranged to transmit the motion from the fixed toothed wheel to the axle of the comb, so that the comb revolves quickly in a direction opposite to that of the roller and brush. In a modification, the spurwheels on the axles of the roller, brush, and comb are driven by a rotating instead of a fixed spurwheel, while the discs are slowly and independently rotated about the axle a.
