Abstract

9907. Beck, R. May 10. Magnetic looms; picking-m o t i o n s, selvages, forming in shuttleless looms.-A shuttle, or a weftcarrier 27<a>, which draws the weft in loop form from bobbins 65 at the sides of the loom, is operated by electromagnets in a carriage 20, which is drawn across the loom on a rail 18<a> by a band 21, passing around guide-pulleys 45, 60, 61 and sheaves 46, 49, 59 in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The sheave 49 is mounted upon a boss 51, which is caused to reciprocate on the shaft by a link 52 from a bellcrank lever 53, operated by a cam 18<b> and spring 57. The electromagnets are energized through the guide-plates 26, 27, Fig. 4, but at each end of the plates the polarity is reversed, and the weftcarrier is gripped by a spring clutch formed of two members 38, 39 pivoted upon the bar 31. The continued motion of the carriage causes the clutch to release the weft-carrier, which is brought to rest by a buffer 41. Tension is imparted to the weft as it enters the shed by means of weights, and the weft is arranged to be caught by the weftcarrier by means of a vertically-reciprocating rod, having a guide-eye through which the weft passes. The loop of weft at each side of the loom is received by a pin 74, Fig. 8. on a spring sliding arm 73 in a socket 75 on a sleeve 76 on a pin 77, which is raised and lowered by a cam 81 ; the sleeve is also oscillated by a nose-piece 84 on the disc 85 engaging with a projection 83.
