Gaseo us-fuel fnrnaces and kilns. -Producer or other gas is burnt in two stages, firstly with incomplete combustion at a low temperature, and finally with complete combustion at a high temperature, a certain proportion of fresh gas being supplied directly to the hightemperature furnace. Fig. 2 shows the invention applied to a combined furnace for heating iron and steel sheets, bars, or black plates at a low temperature, and for heating a water-tube steam boiler (not shown) at a high temperature. Producer gas is supplied by the pipe E to primary combustion chambers, filled with chequer brickwork, one of which is shown at B. A limited supply of air is admitted at c, c through passages passing through the base of the furnace from the front. The products of incomplete combustion pass through heating-chambers C containing the iron plates &c., and are conducted through passages d to the secondary combustion chambers, one of which is shown at F. Air to complete the combustion is supplied through passages f, k, and a supplementary supply of fresh gas is admitted by the pipe G. The steam boiler is placed between the open mouths of two combustion chambers F. Means may be provided for introducing a supplementary supply of air to the primary combustion chamber, so as to produce a somewhat higher temperature in the low-temperature furnace, as for instance when blooms, billets or the like are to be heated. The arrangement of the high and low temperature furnaces or heating-chambers may be varied as required, and both may be used for a variety of purposes. Thus, the low-temperature heating may be applied to furnaces or kilns for heating copper ingots, bars, and sheets, close-annealing metals, burning bricks and other earthenware goods, and for like purposes.
