'HEARTH-FUR-NACE FOR METALLURGICAL OPERATIONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,715, dated August 19, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known Ythat I, BERNARD CHARLES4 LAUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hearth-Furnaces for Metallurgical Operations, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Canada, dated January 21, 1890, No. 33,464); and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part-of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnaces for heating or melting iron or steel, and for metallurgical operations generally.
The object of my invention is to provide a .furnace which will be comparatively cheap in construction and which can be operatedv at the minimum cost in fuel; and to this end my invention consists in placing the coalburning furnace at each end of the Workinghearth, re-enforcing the iiame or res in the coal-burning furnaces by jets or currents of producer-gas, and finally carrying the Waste products of combustion off through a stack located at the working-chamber.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved furnace. Fig. 2 is atop or plan view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line a.' w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical vieu7 taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
A indicates the Working or heating chamber of the furnace, and B the hearth, which gradually slopes from each end of the heating-chamber toward the center, said hearth being supported on a suitable bed of masonry. The side and end Walls of the entire furnace are braced by suitable longitudinal and vertical bars and rods in a manner well known to structures of this kind, and the Workingdoors of the heating-chamber are provided with suitable devices by which they can be readily opened and closed by the operator.

D D are the furnaces proper located at each end of the heating or Working chamber and commiilnicating therewith by suitable port or ports E, located over the bridge-Wall F. The furnace D may be of any approved construction, provided with the usual grate-bars, doors, and ash-pits.
G are chambers built at the ends of the'furnaces D, in which are located the pipes H, through Which gas is supplied from the producer to the point of combustion at the bridge- Wall. The gas from the producer is supplied to the pipes H in the chambers G through the pipesl, the pipes H being coiled in the chamber G, so as to present as much heated surface as possible to the gas passing therethrough. The pipes H communicate with the pipe or drums K at or near their centralportions, While the ends of said drums are bent inward at L and communicate with the flues L, formed in the side Walls of the furnace.
M are openings formed in the end Walls of the furnaces, which allor a portion of the heated gases and flame to enter the chamber G and heat the gases in the drums K, the unconsumed gases and products of combustion in the chamber G being carried into the flues L by the jets of heated gases from the drums K, Where they are mingled With-said gases and carried forward to mingle with the gases and products of combustion arising from the burning fuel from the furnaces D, just over the bridge-Wall, Where a complete combustion of all the gases is effected.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Afurnace for metallurgical operations, consisting of a heating or Working chamber having a fire-box at each end thereof, supplemental chambers located outside the fireboxes, iiues in the Walls of each fire-box communicating with the supplemental chambers and with the heating-chamber at the bridge- Wall thereof, openings in the end Walls of the fire-boxes forming communications between them and the supplemental chambers, and gas-supply pipes located in the supplemental chambers and opening into the side flues,
