Abstract

3023. Hawkins, H. Feb. 10. Acetylene lamps; velocipede lamps.-Relates to acetylene generators in which the supply of water is automatically regulated. In the bicycle lamp shown, the closed water tank A communicates by a tube B open to the air at the top, and provided with a water inlet slot D and a siphon bend, with a generator C. The water escapes through grooves in a socket E<1>, from which depends an adjustable feeding-needle E. The base of the container C is raised at the centre. The carbide surrounds the perforated tube F, and is held down by a pad F<1> having an upper plate pressed downwards by a spring. The gas escapes through a filtering-pad to the pipe G leading to the burner. If the pressure increases in the generator, the water is forced up the tube B till the opening D is covered. As the pressure falls, the opening is partially uncovered, and air again enters the tank A through the open end of the tube B and slot D. This arrangement may be applied to lanterns, or to table or other lamps.
