Abstract

1114. Teter, W. L. Jan. 17. Liquid and gaseous fuel fittings; smoke-consuming; blast apparatus.-Oil gas generated in tubular retorts behind the bridge of an ordinary coal-burning furnace is supplied to burners beneath the grate, and also in some cases to burners at the bridge for smoke-consuming purposes. When working with forced draught, a steam jet induces a supply of air through a heating-coil in the flues to the ashpit. The retort B is formed of a series of parallel tubes with end connections, constituting a single tortuous passage. The tubes are covered by a protecting-sheathing E, Fig. 3, of cast iron, or by cast-iron rings E<1>, Fig. 6, the intervening spaces being filled with fireclay &c. They are supported at each end in frames F, F, Fig. 3, containing fireclay &c. in which the couplings D are embedded. The burners G consist of perforated pipes branching from the pipe H. The two pipes nearest the bridge form a separate retort, from which gas escapes through perforations and is burnt for smoke - consuming purposes. Oil and steam are supplied to the retorts by the injectors R<1>, R', the oil being withdrawn from a tank M wherein it floats on water under pressure ; g', g<2> are sightfeed arrangements in the oil pipes. The oil is supplied to the tank by the pump O. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, heated air is supplied under pressure through the pipe U, U' to the ashpit by a steam jet w, the part U<1> of the pipe being in the form of a serpentine coil in the flue. In this case, the smoke - consuming retort and burner are dispensed with.
