Abstract

16,832. Doebbel, G. A. July 29. Smoke-consuming.-Relates to means for consuming smoke in furnaces generally, and consists in placing burners in the flues leading to the chimney and in supplying compressed air behind the firebridge ; also in placing heat-retaining devices, consisting of gratings of iron or stone or of iron and stone combined, in the flues. Fig. 3 shows the invention as applied to a Cornish boiler. The burners a consist of a long tube f placed in a pipe e and containing a wick, which is supplied with oil from a small reservoir g. A hole is provided in the inner end of the pipe e for the flame to pass through. Perforated pipes c are placed in the ashpit for supplying compressed air to the fire, to compensate for the loss of draught caused by the air entering the flues through the pipes b. The air may be taken from a preliminary heating-chamber heated by waste steam passing through radiator pipes and built in the upper masonry of the boiler. In most cases, however, this chamber is dispensed with when the heat-retaining devices d are fitted. For coal-gas furnaces, the burners a are supplied with gas instead of with oil.
