Abstract

17,088. Schumacher, J. June 20, [date claimed under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Acetylene lamps.-The carbide chamber C, the gas chamber D, and the combustion chamber A are detachably connected to the water chamber B, from which the water passes, when the valve K is opened, by the channels j', m, e, e<2>, e<3> to the adjustable felt-lined valve N, whence it trickles down the web-coated rod e' to the carbide cartridge C<1>. Tallow, oil, glucose, or other binding- material is mixed with the carbide to permit of its being moulded into a cartridge of the shape shown in Fig. 3, the cartridge being mounted in a removable casing C', and centered, when in position, by the end of the rod e'. The central cup-shaped cavity of the cartridge forms a receptacle for the spent carbide, and, together with the tapered walls, ensures an even distribution of the water and consequently a uniform generation of gas. The apertures d are made small to prevent the passage of particles of lime to the gas chamber D, whence the gas ascends the channel f<2> and the tube F<1> to the burner H'. The body H of the burner is connected to the tube F<1> by a bayonet fastening, and is supported upon a spring R<1> to permit of its being lowered upon the fixed needle P to clear the burner orifice. When used as a cycle or vehicular lamp, the body B is rotatably mounted in a band R, the plane of which may be adjusted relatively to that of the felt-lined clips S, S' by means of the serrated clamps s and the bolt T.
