8184. Gardner, R. A. April 6. Metallic wheels; axle-boxes; axle-caps; felloes or rims; hubs; spokes.-Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the wheel, and Fig. 3 a cross-section of the hub. The spokes are corrugated tubes, or they may be formed by bending a corrugated metallic strip, of which the edges are flanged, into an approximatelytriangular form, as is indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1. The adjacent parts of two strips form one spoke d, the end of which is secured in a socket formed by bolting together the two halves b of the hub. The wheel is fitted with a corrugated rim which is adapted to receive either a rubber tyre or wooden felloes for a metallic tyre. Instead of bolting together the two parts of the hub, one part may have a tubular extension over which the other is passed and is secured in position by right and left-hand nuts screwed on to the extension. In a modification, the axle-box may replace the tubular extension, and an axle-cap a is screwed on to the end. Packing, elastic and sound-absorbing.-The ends of the spokes, and the spaces f, may be filled with bard rubber.
