Abstract

8160. Williams, J. April 5. Pressure-regulating valves.-Within the chest A, having an inlet B, is arranged a sliding valve D pressed against its seat A' by a forked spring F the pressure thereon of which is adjusted by means of a screw F<1>. The valve has ports band c adapted to register with the outlet and exhaust ports a and d respectively. The valve is actuated by the bellows G communicating with the service pipe C. The rod H connecting the valve to the bellows is normally pressed downwards by a spring J bearing against the bellows and packing-gland. Fig. 1 shows the valve fully open. If, now, the pressure in the pipe C rises, the bellows expand and partially close the port a, at the same time opening the exhaust port d. If the service pipe bursts, the bellows collapse and the valve D descends, closing both ports a and d ; to open the valve again it is necessary to expand the bellows by hand. The stuffing-box I is preferably formed with an oil chamber therein. In a modification, the exhaust is dispensed with. This valve is applicable for use with gas, air, steam, water, and other fluids.
