Abstract
4848. Bothwell, B. F. Feb. 28. A shtrays. - Ashtrays are formed with a truncatedcone shaped recess the bottom of which consists of two pivoted segments e, e<1>, kept closed normally by the spring j, j<1> but opening to allow the ashes to drop into a box beneath whenever a rod carrying an inverted cone passing through the space g is depressed. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, pressure on a button depresses the rod u against the tension of a spring, and an arm u<1> partly turns a crown-wheel which gears with a pinion on a pin o<2>. The blade o' is rigidly attached to this pin, and the blade o turns loosely on it. A pin-and-slot connection v, v<1> allows the blade o<1> to coincide with the blade o, which it then carries aside with it, thus effecting the same purpose as the separating-segments in Fig. 2. The box which receives the ashes has a removable bottom of the type of a canister lid. A handle is provided for carrying the tray.
