Abstract

1301. Herzog, F. B. Jan. 17. Signals, electric, bell, colour, and indicator or visible; indicators or annunciators.-Relates to an electric signalling or annunciator apparatus, the indications of which are produced by the electrolysis of a suitable solution, such as iodide of potassium. The solution is placed in a tank A, which is made of insulating-material, and closed in front by a removable transparent plate P and washer B held in place by screws V. The tank A is enclosed in an outer casing R', and the bottom is perforated to receive the rubber plugs J<1>, through which platinum wires pass from the terminals N to the platinum electrodes F. The supporting-plates O of the terminals N may be embedded in an insulating-backing R<111> of cement &c. The terminals N are connected to pushbuttons &c. at the different sub-stations, one or more of the terminals serving as a common return for all the circuits. When a signal is transmitted, the solution is electrolysed, and a brown deposit of iodine is formed on the corresponding electrode. Each electrode may be surrounded by a glass cup G, to catch and retain the deposit, which under ordinary conditions gradually disappears. The deposit may be rendered more permanent by the addition of glycerine &c. to the solution. Hyposulphite of sodium may also be added, to retain the solution in its normal condition. The deposit may be dispersed after each signal, by blowing air through the perforated tube D, or by reversing the current. A bell may also be included in a common circuit, when desired.
