Beer and other beverages, raising and drawing-off. -Upon the mouth of the vessel a which contains the beverage is bolted a cap b which bears on the top side a plug cock g (whence a pipe f dips down to the bottom of the vessel), and on the underside a cylinder m of compressed carbonic-acid gas with an internal self-closed lift valve q having a lateral outlet x into the vessel. When the plug cock is opened, a cam i upon it opens the gas valve by acting on an intervening push-rod t in a socket s on the cap. The external part w of the stem of the gas valve is only put into place just before the cylinder is screwed to the cap, so that the gas valve is not liable to be accidentally opened.
