Abstract

22,717. Phillips, C. E. S. Oct. 4. Switches.-Interrupters for induction coils are formed of two bodies of mercury which are brought together and separated to make and break the circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, A is a cup containing mercury which forms one contact or terminal ; B is a tube having a lateral hole b and containing a body of mercury which makes contact when the tube is lowered into the cup A. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a capillary tube D has a branch D<2> filled with mereury ; on the open end is fitted a flexible tube E which is filled with mercury ; on compressing the tube E by a rod G &c. the mercury M<2> is forced into contact with the mercury in the branch D<2>.
