Abstract

11,674. Boult, A. J., [Henes, J., and Keller, F. C.]. May 11. Bottling.-Relates to apparatus for filling bottles with carbonated or effervescing liquids. The bottles are supported against the filling-nozzles d<2> by the pivoted jaws I and the rests H, the nozzles being mounted on filling-heads D, which are pivoted at their ends so as to be capable of oscillation in a vertical plane. The liquid is supplied under pressure to the reservoir A, from which it is delivered through the pipes a<3> to the filling-heads. The bottles are placed in position for filling when the filling-nozzles are in their highest position, and are then turned down into their lowest position, this latter movement serving to close the arms I round the bottle neck, and also to open valves which admit compressed gas from the gas reservoir B. The liquid-supply valves are then automatically opened by the gas, and the liquid is admitted through the tubes E into the bottles. The pressure of the gas within the bottles serves to prevent frothing, and this gas is forced back into the reservoir B as the bottles are filled. The reservoirs A, B are each connected to a chamber C, which is provided with a flexible diaphragm c, the movements of the diaphragm, caused by variations of pressure in the reservoirs, serving to open a snift valve c<3>, or a gas-supply valve c<2>, to maintain constant relative pressures within the reservoirs. When the bottles are filled, they are again raised to their upper position, this movement causing the arms I to be opened to permit the removal of the bottles.
