Abstract

10,810. Hauff, J. April 30. o-Toluene-sulphonic acid and o-sulpho-benzoic acid are prepared by oxidizing o-thiocresol with alkaline potassium permanganate, either product being obtained by using a suitable proportion of oxidizing-agent. The resulting solution is filtered, neutralized, and evaporated to dryness. The product is intended for use in the manufacture of benzoic sulphinide. In a similar manner, o-thiocresol, di- and tri-chlorinated in the side chain. may be used, less oxidizing-agent being needed. Halogen and nitro sulphonic acid.-If halogen, sulpho, or nitro derivatives of thiocresol, in which the substitution occurs in the benzene nucleus, are used, halogen, sulpho, and nitro derivatives of otoluene sulphonic acid and of o-sulpho-benzoic acid result.
