Abstract
7096. Parshall, H. F. March 18. Motors, controlling.-The Figures show a method of regulating the speed of a series electric motor, by using a storage battery B in shunt to the whole or part of the series coil C of the motor. In Fig. 1 the battery is in shunt to the whole of the main series coil, and has in its circuit a resistance R, which can be varied by means of the switch S. In Fig. 3, the resistance R is omitted and the battery is put in shunt with some of the series coils, the number of which is varied by means of the switch S. The battery circuit, including a variable resistance, may be in shunt with part of the main series coil. Below a certain speed of the motor, the battery is charged, while above this speed the battery supplies a current to retard the motor and so maintain a constant ratio of speed, which is varied as required by means of the switch S. The invention is applicable to electric tramears.
