Abstract

9363. Lake, W. E., [United States Light and Heating Co.]. April 15. Regulation, automatic systems and apparatus for.-The regulator of a dynamo for a supply system containing a battery consists of one or more resistance sections under the control of one or more vibrating contacts, normally controlled by one or more series coils ; and a voltage relay which operates to close the circuit of one or more voltage coils when the voltage of the dynamo rises to a predetermined value. In the arrangement shown, the circuit of the shunt field 2 contains twp resistance sections 3, 4, one of which is greater than the other. Movable contacts 13, 14 are mounted upon cores 7, 8 provided with series windings 5, 6, auxiliary windings 17, 18, and voltage windings 21, 22. The contacts 13, 14 normally engage fixed contacts 15, 16 by means of adjustable springs 11, 12, the spring 12 being stronger than the spring 11. When the dynamo is at rest, a battery 26 supplies the load 27, and the resistance sections 3, 4 are short-circuited. As the dynamo speeds up, its voltage gradually increases, and, when it reaches a predetermined value, a switch 25 connects the dynamo to the battery and load circuit through the series coils 5, 6. If the current from the dynamo rises above a predetermined value, the coil 5 operates to separate the contacts 13, 15, thereby inserting the resistance section 3 and de-energizing the winding 17. The reduced current through the coil 5 allows the spring 11 to close the contacts 13, 15, thereby short-circuiting the resistance 3. If the current output of the dynamo still tends to increase, the resistance 3 is introduced for longer intervals; and, upon a further tendency to increase, the resistance 3 is placed continuously in circuit, and the winding 6 operates to introduce the resistance 4. When the battery 26 approaches its fully-charged condition, the increased electromotive force causes the relay 19 to close the circuit of the voltage coils 21, 22, and the voltage of the dynamo is reduced by inserting resistances 3, 4, the switch 25 simultaneously operating to disconnect the dynamo from the battery.
