Abstract

23,205. British Thomson-Houston Co., [Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.]. Oct. 27. Dynamos, regulating ;motors, controlling.-In alternating-current distribution in which fluctuations are taken up by an auxiliary machine provided with a flywheel or the like, the auxiliary machine is a commutator motor excited in accordance with the load and arranged so that its speed tends to decrease with an increased load. In the three-phase arrangement shown in Fig. 1, in which G is a generator and m a load, the auxiliary machine B is coupled to the flywheel f and both stator and rotor are supplied from the mains, the former direct and the latter through series transformers T or in series with the mains. Instead of regulating the machine by the current in the system, it may be regulated by means of an automatic switch, as shown in Fig. 2, in which the inductive resistance R in the rotor circuit is varied by the lever l, the position of which depends upon the currents in the system. The arm is controlled by two small motors m, m<1> acting in opposition, one increasing the pull with increasing current and the other acting in the opposite manner. Other means of regulating the phase or voltage may be employed, such as a variable-ratio transformer.
