Looms, pile forming and cutting in.-In looms for Axminster carpets and other tufted pile fabrics, the materials w for forming the tufts are brought into position opposite grippers g by means of jacquard mechanism, consisting of a cylinder, perforated face-plate, horizontal spring needles, verticallymoving rods to be stopped by the needles, and rocking levers connected to the adjustable bars f<1>. An additional set of stronger horizontal needles may be-used between the fine jacquard needles and the vertically-moving rods. The required lengths of the material are cut off by a plain or rotary knife h<1>, traversed on a rail h<10> across the loom in the groove between the two parts of a double comb h on arms h<12>. The grippers g are caused to insert the lengths thus cut off between the warps m by the combined action of arms g<2>, p<2>, actuated by suitable levers and connections from cams on the cam shaft. After a shot of weft has been inserted, a pusher o folds the ends of the tufts around it, and a comb or blade in front holds them in position whilst the binding-wefts are being inserted. The reed m<1> consists of a number of doubled or looped pieces, through which pass both the warp threads m and steel strips l secured to the breast plate n. The nippers g are closed and opened by means of blocks g<6>, having cams g<10> and pins g<7> to engage with the hooks g<8>, and these blocks are turned by a lever, operated in one direction by a cam from spur and segment gearing, and in the other by a roller on a series of linked levers. These nippers are lifted, to get the exact height of tuft required, by means of a lifter g<4>, which then engages with the shaft g<5>.
