Abstract

1,257,216. Gripper axminster looms. FIELD CREST MILLS Inc. 14 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8260/69. Heading D1E. A gripper Axminster loom has grippers with a very small stroke which remain between the dents of the reed at all times. Operation of grippers: In Figure 3 a tuck wire 38 has moved to hold clear previously inserted tufts and the grippers 35a, 35b have pulled out lengths of tuft material P. The fell of the fabric is then moved to position B and a needle 26 inserts a loop of weft yarn. The shed then changes, a cutter 37 severs the tufts and a reed 24 beats up the weft with the tufts still held by the grippers (Fig. 4, not shown). As the reed retracts the grippers move towards the selectors 36 taking with them the legs of the tufts and the position of release of the tufts determines whether or not the legs of the tufts have equal length. Whilst the grippers are again closing over the selected tufts the tuck wire 38 again moves (Fig. 2, not shown) to hold clear the released tufts. The cycle reccommences. Beat-up motion: The reed dents 24 (Fig. 13) are attached to a sley 66 that is part of a pivoted crank 65 driven by links 63, 62, 60 and a follower and cam 57, 56 on the main shaft 50 of the loom. Pile yarn selectors: The pile yarn selectors 36 (Fig. 13) are mounted on a frame 73 that is adjustable both horizontally and vertically to bring the selectors the correct distance from the breast beam 70 (Fig. 3) and in the correct alignment with the gripps 35a, 35b. The selectors 36 have yarn passages 92 with springs 93 and are operated by cords 95a (Fig. 13) from a jacquard 95 driven by a chain 96 (Fig. 11, not shown) from the main shaft 50 of the loom. Warp let-off, shedding: The warp 6 comes from beams 100, 101 at the front of the loom and passes backwardly over whip rolls 110, 111 (Fig. 13) and a fell shifting roll 120 to the heald frames 27 operated by links 130, 131 from a lever 13 pivoted by a cam 142 (Fig. 18) on a shaft 51. Take-up; Fell shifting: Normal take up (Figs. 14, 16) is by way of a spiked roll 150 at the top of the loom driven by a crank 180 on the reed shaft 64 and a ratchet gear mechanism 167, 171, 172 which engages a stub shaft 197 on a further ratchet wheel 166 to advance the roll 150. To advance the fell to the position B (Fig. 3) to allow for gripper movement the further ratchet wheel 166 is advanced by a crank operated lever 193 that also operates the fell shifting roll 120. The cloth advances over the front of the loom to a friction driven cloth beam 160 (Fig. 9). Pile cutting: The pile cutter 37 (Fig. 22) is moved upwardly so that serrations 300 engage the tufts. A plurality of knives 301 then reciprocate to sever the tufts. Framework: A walkway 107 (Fig. 9) is provided between the sidewalls of the loom and supports 105 are provided for the warp beams and stanchions 157 for the cloth beam. (For Figures see next page)
