5439. Wilkinson, W. S. March 1. Paving blocks and tiles.-Asphalt is mixed with crushed basalt, or the like, and powdered limestone at a temperature of 300‹ F., and the hot mixture is moulded into blocks or tiles which are delivered on to an endless chain carrier passing through a cooling-stream of water. The asphalt used is preferably that obtained from Trinidad, and is first pulverized and macerated in water to remove the soluble salts and non-bituminous matter. It is afterwards placed in a tank containing coils of steam pipes, and jets of steam are discharged into the mass at the bottom of the tank. About 12 per cent, of a heavy oil, preferably a residuum of petroleum, is added to the hot asphalt before it is mixed with the basalt and limestone.
