Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' EMMA O. TRUSDELL, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
FUEL. AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
$EEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,626, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed June 5, 1901. Serial No. 63,218-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMMA O. TRUSDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and Improved Fuel and Method of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a new and useful fuel prepared from waste material not heretofore used in the production of fuels and in the process of preparing or making the same.
In preparing or making my new and improved fuel I take what is commonly known as garbagethat is, the ordinary vegetable and animal refuse from households, hotels, and other places where such refuse is produced-and where liquids or fluids are prescut I free the garbage therefrom by draining or otherwise freeing it from such liquids. I then take a quantity of common ashes, usually equal to about one-third of the amount of garbage, mix them with the garbage, and then grind them together by any suitable machinery. A strong machine, somewhat of the construction of a sausage-machine, will grind them together sufficiently. In practice I have found that coal-dust, sawdust, or street-sweepin gs can be used in place of ashes with equally good results. When the component parts are ground together, the product will burn readily; but for a commercial product I then dry it until it is hard enough to be broken into lumps, or it maybe molded into regular form.
By making a fuel of refuse or garbage I am able to dispose of material which would soon be ofiensive, and I also solve the problem as to what to do with garbage, for my method may be adapted to the needs of cities and towns, as with sufficient apparatus there is no limit to the amount to be used, and out of that which has heretofore been considered a (No specimens.)
difficult and troublesome matter to dispose of I make a Valuable fuel product, which burns with intense heat and may be used as fuel for furnaces for generating steam or in other furnaces and in household-stoves. It will also produce gas in. sufficient quantities for heating or illuminating purposes.
It should be understood that the term ashes as used in the claims includes also the substitutes named or other equivalents and that the quantity used may be consider= ably varied.
That whichI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A fuel product composed of garbage mixed and comminuted with ashes, substan tially as specified.
2. A fuel product composed of garbage mixed and comminuted with ashes, hardened by drying, substantially as specified.
3. The process of preparing fuel from garbage which consists in mixing the garbage with ashes and comminuting the mixture, substantially as specified.
4E. The process of preparing fuel from garbage which consists in mixing the garbage with ashes, comminuting the mixture, and then drying the mixture, substantially as specified.
5. The process of preparing fuel from garbage which consists in freeing the same from undue moisture, mixing it with ashes, and then grinding the mixture, substantially as specified.
6. The process of preparing fuel from gar bage which consists in freeing the same from undue moisture, mixing it with ashes, grinding the mixture, and then drying the ground product, substantially as specified.
EMMA O. TRUSDELL.
