Abstract
173,907. Pyzel, D. Oct. 19, 1920. Hydrocarbons, distilling.-In distilling bituminous materials for the production of oil, gas, and coke or residue, the material is passed in the form of non-coherent lumps down a rotary kiln 1 in a stream of hot combustion gases admitted by pipe 6. Materials that become liquid on heating such as asphalt, asphaltic residues, heavy petroleum oils &c. are formed into lumps by addition of solid materials such as sand, sawdust, powdered coal or coke, oil-sand, or the residue from the kiln and solid materials such as oil-sand, powdered oil shale, lignite, &c., are mixed with liquid asphaltic substances. The hot gases entering by the pipe 6 are regulated in temperature by admission of steam or water through an inlet 18 or by residual gases from a pump 5. The materials are fed to the kiln through a crushing and mixing machine 8 and a feeding-device 9. The vapours pass from the upper end of the still through a condenser 2, gas trap 3, and scrubber 4. The residual gases pass to an outlet pipe 16.
