Locking nuts.-The nut a, Fig. 4, is formed or provided with ratchet or other teeth a<2> to engage with the spring or other pawl b<1> or pawls upon the washer b or upon the work, or the nut carries the pawls and the washer the teeth. The teeth may be on the face of the nut, as shown, or around it, and the pawl may be in one with the washer or otherwise. The washer may be prevented from turning by a pin b<3> or by flanges engaging the work d. To fix the nut in any position on the bolt without the washer bearing against the work, a threaded key h, Fig. 32, is used sliding in a groove in the bolt. The key has a projection h<1>, against which an inclined flange h<2> on the washer bears. Rough adjustment is effected by sliding the key in the bolt before the nut is screwed on, and fine adjustment by turning the washer. The washer, when adjusted, is kept from turning by a pin b<3>, Fig. 4, as before, or by a nib h<4>, Fig. 32, fitting into the teeth h<3>, Figs. 32 and 33, around the bolt-hole of the washer, or by permanently swivelling the washer to the nut, Fig. 38, and forming the washer with a groove h<7> for the projection h<1>. A gap is formed on the lower wall of this groove to enable the projection to enter.
