Abstract
4263. Peck, W. H., and Patterson, D. R. W. Feb. 17. Steam - generator furnaces and furnace flues ; settings, casings, and external flues.-Consists mainly in the application to a boiler of a firebrick or similar heat-resisting casing f, which is supported on the side walls of the setting and on longitudinal partitions k and arches h<1>, h<1>. The casing is made in sections as shown, and a small space is left between it and the boiler. It serves to protect the boiler from the flames and to equalize the heat, while, becoming highly heated, it aids the consumption of smoke. The supporting-partitions form the walls of flues or passages to which air is supplied by ducts o, o, and which communicate with a secondary combustion chamber or " retort " m. The improvements are stated to be specially applicable in cases where powdered fuel is fed to the furnace by a blast, but ordinary coal, oil, or gas may be used as fuel, and the invention may be applied to Cornish and similar boilers, as well as to the externally-fired multitubular boiler shown, in which case a heat-resisting lining to the flue replaces the casing f.
