Abstract

3736. Farley, J. Feb. 12. Sleeve joints; spigot-andsocket joints.-C o n s i s t s mainly in the application of fabric to retain cement while it sets. Fig. 3 shows a joint in which the pipe ends are enclosed by a recessed sleeve a<1>, the joint being covered by a strip of canvas or other fabric b cemented to the sleeve, or, as shown, secured by wires d. The wires may lie in the angles of the recess, or special grooves may be made for them in the flanges of the sleeve, which fit against the pipes. Cement is introduced through an opening c, and the fabric prevents its entrance into the pipes. The invention may be modified in various ways. Fig. 8 shows one of the ways of applying the invention to a spigot-and-socket joint. The spigot has flanges a<5> made with grooves to receive the retaining-wires d for the fabric b, which is provided with a fitting neck b<1>. The neck comes out through the hole c in the socket, and the cement is introduced through the neck. The fabric may also be cemented on the spigot, the mouth of the socket having a flange which meets the spigot and forms a cavity for the reception of jointing- cement. In another form, the fabric is wired or tied on the spigot, and in this case the flange just mentioned can be dispensed with, as the fabric retains the cement by itself. When the spigot or socket has no flanges, the socket has a ring or one or more snugs to centre the pipes. Several modified forms of construction are shown in the Specification, in one of which, Fig. 12, the fabric b is wired or otherwise tied to both spigot and socket.
