Abstract

189,507. White, J. Aug. 25, 1921. Calendering and pressing.-The pressure on the rolls of calenders is adjusted by a system of levers and weights with which is incorporated a flexible member constituted by an hydraulic chamber associated with a gauge. As shown, pressure is applied to the top roll 1 of a calender through a lever 2 acting upon a nut 3 fitted to a screw 4 engaging the bearing-block 5. The lever 2 is pivoted at 6, and at its free end is connected to an hydraulic chamber 7 fitted with a flexible membrane upon which bears a yoke 14 connected by chains &c. 14<1> to a rod 12 connected at its lower end to a short arm 16 mounted on a rock-shaft 16<1> carrying a long arm 17 furnished with a weight 18 adapted normally to rest upon a stop 19. The rod 12 is in two portions connected by a coupling 13 which is adjusted to regulate the pressure upon the block 5, such pressure being indicated by a gauge 15. The weight 18 rises under excessive pressure; or the membrane may be designed to give way to avoid damage to the calender.
