Abstract
188,739. K³ndig, G. Aug. 10, 1921. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Disc apparatus; files, treating.-A file-grinding machine having a vertically adjustable work-table 3 slidable on a frame 1 is characterized by the feature that the work-table, the weight of which is approximately balanced by a weight 9, carries a balance weight 20 for pressing the work against a grinding-wheel 11, which remains at a constant height, the table being provided with a device causing it to descend as the grinding-wheel wears away. An upright 4 attached to the table 3 is connected to the weight 9 by ropes and pulleys 6, 8. The table 3 is slotted to surround the wheel 11 and carries guides 14, wherein a workholder is reciprocated; the guides carry bearings 16 for a crank-shaft 17. On the pin of crankshaft 17 is pivoted a beam 18, which carries the slidable weight 20 and is slotted to engage a bolt 26 of a fork 23 embracing a pressure-roller 24 adapted to engage the top of the work-holder. As the grinding-wheel 11 is at a constant height, the beam 18 acts as a lever fulcrumed at 26 to lift the table 3 till a stop 43 thereon engages the lower surface of the file. The position of the shaft 17 is adjusted by a lever 22 moving over a sector 21. The pressure between the work and the grinding-wheel is due to the unbalanced weight of the table, which is determined by the position of a weight on a lever exerting a torque upon a ratchet-wheel 34 geared by bevel-wheels 38, 39 to a pinion 41 carried by the table and engaging a fixed rack 42. As the grinding-wheel wears away, the unbalanced weight of the table causes the table to descend. In order that this descent shall not occur during the reversal of movement of the work-holder, a band-brake 31 on the same shaft as the ratchet-wheel 34 is operated by a tension member 30 secured to the end of a rod 29 connected to the reversing- mechanism of the work-holder. The rod 29 has an upwardly concave slot 44 engaging a fixed pin 45 so that, when the rod 29 is at either of its end positions, the member 30 is slack, but when the machine is stationary and the rod 29 occupies a mid-position, the member is taut, thus preventing downward movement of the table.
