Abstract

110,370. Walker, H. W. Dec. 19, 1916. Disk and wheel apparatus.-The work-holder 38 is pivoted at each end on a slide 35 which is moved to and fro, in the direction of the axis of the grinding-wheel 7, by means of a link 34 and a lever 33 fixed on the upper end of a shaft 30. An arm 29 on the lower end of this shaft engages by means of a pin 28 in a cam groove in a disk 25 which is driven by bevel-wheels from the shaft 19. The shaft 19 carries fast and loose pulleys and is driven by belt from the grinding-wheel shaft through a counter shaft 13; the belt-shifter comprises a rod 67 carrying a spring 68 and connected to a treadlelever 64. Depression of the treadle to start the mechanism causes the compression of the spring, and the tooth 70 is moved beyond a catch 71 which retains it until the catch is raised by a projection 72 on the cam disk, whereupon the spring moves the belt-shifter to carry the belt', on to the loose pulley. The work-holder has a projecting arm 39 which moves over a guide-bar 40, so that, as the slide is moved endways, the work-holder is rocked about an axis parallel to that of the grinding- wheel. The guide-bar is mounted on a vertical slide 42 to which movement may be imparted from the countershaft 13 by chain gearing 52, crank 48, and link 47; a clutch 53 on the shaft 13 permits the drive to be disconnected, the slide may then be locked in position by a screw 45. The slide 35 is mounted on a table 54 which is movable in vertical guides on the frame of the machine by means of a screw and not operated from the hand-wheel 58. The lower end of the screw rests on one end of a lever 61, the other end of which engages a cam 26 secured to the camdisk 25; by this means, the table is raised into operative position and lowered therefrom, automatically, when the slide-operating mechanism is started and stopped.
