Abstract

Endless-track vehicles.- In endless-track vehicles, the track is formed of articulated members and is so constructed and arranged that the weight of the vehicle is suspended from the upper run of the track. The main shaft 2 of the vehicle is journaled in a frame 14 which is provided with arms 16 - - 19 carrying rollers 25, 26 which bear on the inside of the track elements and act as guides and rollers 27, 28 which run on the track provided on the elements and support the vehicle. The drive is from a sprocket wheel on the shaft 2 through a chain 38 and toothed wheels 34, 35 which engage the upper and lower parts of the track. The elements forming the track consist of channel shaped pieces 41 hinged together by engaging single and double lugs 47, 48, 49, the lugs 49 being formed with diverging side walls 50, 51 which provide the teeth for engagement with the driving wheels 34, 35. The inner ends of the pieces 41 are shaped as shown at 68, 69 so that bending of the track is permitted. Relative movement of the parts is limited by hooked projections 63 on one and stops 64 on the other, and also by shouldered sleeves 58 fixed to one end of each part and slidable in a slot in the adjacent part. The track for the rollers 27, 28, is provided by wings 66, 67. The outer sides of the track elements are shaped in the form of circular parts 54, 55 struck from the hinge connections as centre, and each alternate element is fitted with a ground engaging member 74 of corresponding shape and approximately double length so as to provide a sliding cover for the joint between the adjacent elements. The members 74 are flanged and provided with suitable tread blocks 79 and side wings 77, 78 adapted to increase the support on soft ground.
