Electric and magnetic.- For regulating the speed of a gramophone or the Like, a disc of conducting material is mounted on the record-carrying spindle, and caused to pass between the poles of a permanent magnet, the position of which is adjustable or the magnetic field variable. In the device shown in Fig. 1, the permanent magnet 2, between the poles of which the conducting disc 1 rotates, is mounted on a non-magnetic pin 3, so that it can be rotatably adjusted by means of a nut 4 in order to vary the position of the poles with respect to the periphery of the disc. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the magnetic field through the disc 1. is varied by altering the distance between secondary pole-pieces 7 and 8, which provide a magnetic circuit in shunt with the main polepieces.
