Couplings, automatic.-In a Janney coupling the knuckle lock 4 is provided with two downwardly-projecting surfaces 8 and 15, the latter, 15, of which engages with a projection 16 on the tail of the knuckle 2 in order to remove the lock 4 from the lock-seat seat 9, and the other 8, for resting on the lock-set ledge formed on the guard' arm side of the coupler head, and with a downwardly-projecting stem 7 operated by a bell-crank lever 11; the surface of contact of the bell-crank lever and stem form an anti-creep device for the lock. In the locked position of the coupler, Fig. 3, the acute angle at the end of the bell-crank lever 11 engages curved surfaces 22, 23 on the stem of the lock which form a frictional grip and prevent the lock 4 from creeping upwards. In order to set the coupling, the end 14 of the bell-crank lever is pulled outwardly until the lock takes up the position shown in dotted line, where the lock rests on the lock-set ledge 9 of the coupler head. Further upward movement of the lock causes the projection 33 to strike the end 32 of the knuckle extractor 26 to open the knuckle block. A projection 28 on the bell-crank lever 11 prevents lateral movement of the stem 7 towards the pivot 12 of the bellcrank lever when the block 4 is being raised.
