Abstract

186,486. Hawthorn, H., and Huntley, H. A. Aug. 8, 1921. Vulcanizing, cores, moulds, pressing-devices for. - Apparatus for vulcanizing simultaneously two sheets or other articles of rubber comprises a two-part mould with heating means, each part of which is provided with a recess of the shape of the article to be produced, means for securing the parts of the mould together, and a resilient hollow receptacle in the cavity formed by the assembled mould capable of being distended to force the rubber into the mould. Two moulds a a<1>, Fig. 1, for moulding sheets of rubber for use on roadways as described in Specification 182,640 with a surface a<2> of the pattern required on the sheet, and means b, b<1> for holding adjuncts desired to be embedded in the sheet, distance-pieces e<1>, and covering-plates e, are charged with rubber and placed in contact as shown and enclose a resilient bag d which, on the admission of steam through the pipe d, is distended and forces the rubber into the recesses of the moulds. Preferably each mould part is provided with independent steam spaces a<3>, to avoid the necessity of a steam-tight joint between the parts. A suitable means for manipulating the mould parts is shown in Fig. 3 in which the upper mould a is mounted in trunnions a* on a, trolley f running on rails f<1>. Rubber and the cover-plate e are placed in the mould a, which is then turned over, and run into position over the stationary lower mould a<1>, lowered by manipulating-screws f<2>, and clamped by the linked bars g. The resilient bag may be replaced by a U-packing which makes a steam-tight joint with the cover-plates e.
