Vacuum tubes.-The filament of a thermionic valve is renewed by forming an opening in the bulb, removing the old filament, placing the new filament in position .by means of a guidetube, through which the filament is threaded before or after insertion in the bulb, and securing the filament to the leading-in wires. An aperture 1 is formed in the bulb at the tip or elsewhere, and hooks 2, 2a on the leading-in wires 3, 3<a> are opened for removing the old filament. A short length of tube is passed through the aperture and the grid 4, the filament 7 being threaded through the tube, and secured by working one end around a hook 2<a> and pinching the hook on to the filament. 'The tube is then withdrawn, the wires 3, 3a bent back into position, and the other end of the filament secured to the other hook 2. In another arrangement, the filament is threaded through a bent tube 12, Fig. 5 before insertion in the bulb, and the tube may be used as a handle for winding the end of the filament on the hook. A similar method may be used when the axis of the electrodes lies along the axis of the bulb. The hooks may be snipped off to remove the old filament and new hooks formed, or the filament mav be secured to each wire by a short-tube or bead.
