Abstract

Testing flash-point and burning-point. - Apparatus for determining the flash-point or burning- point of oils or other volatile liquids comprises a vessel externally heated by electrical means, and adapted to contain and allow ignition of the liquid under test. An apparatus for determining flash-points comprises an outer vessel b, Fig. 1, containing water and heated by electric heating- elements i, and an inner vessel a to receive the oil under test. A removable lid m carries a stirring-device n, and an agitator p, for mixing the air and vapour. The vapour is ignited electrically by a spark or by coils u, Fig. 2, which become red-hot by the passage of a current through them. A revolving contact-breaker t and brushes t' are adjusted so that ignition occurs when holes s in lid m are uncovered by the revolving shutters r. Another lid having larger holes may be used for open tests. For testing burning-point, the apparatus is modified as shown in Fig. 3, the inner vessel being absent. Oil, dropped from the tube y, is vaporized and ignited by the heat of the vessel a. Heated air or oxygen may be supplied through a pipe c' to aid combustion. The inner vessel a may be removed and a retort placed in the outer vessel b for initially distilling the oil.
