Abstract
184,813. Strabucchi, F. Aug. 19, 1921, [Convention date]. Water velocipedes.-A vessel is propelled by a cylinder 3 mounted on a horizontal shaft 4 and having a helical surface 8. The cylinder carries a toothed wheel 9 which meshes with a driving wheel 2 on the vessel. The portion of the helical surface 10 nearest the bow is made of smaller pitch and has a cutting edge 11. The cylinder is divided internally into water-tight compartments and its dimensions are such that it is submerged to a maximum of 80 per cent when the vessel is fully loaded. The vessel may be propelled by two or more such rotating cylinders arranged side by side, and these may be rotated in opposite directions. Additional helical plates may be provided on the cylindrical surface. In a modification, the cylinder forms the floating portion of a water velocipede.
