Driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus; apparatus with jointly-controllable drums. -Winding-gear for double-chain grabs comprises a loosely-mounted hoisting-barrel c driven by a wheel d, and a second barrel a for the opening rope fixed to the shaft b. The winding-drum drives the shaft b, when rotated in the direction for hoisting, through a friction clutch e and ratchet mechanism f, g, the clutch being applied with sufficient force by a spring h to take up any slack in the opening rope. When the opened grab rests on the dump and the winding-rope is wound in to close it, the barrel c drives the barrel a sufficiently to take up any slack in the opening- rope, but since additional rotation of the barrel a would transfer the weight of the grab from the ground to the opening-rope the clutch slips as soon as the opening-rope becomes taut. When hoisting commences, the weight of the grab is taken by the hoisting-rope, and the clutch remains operative to wind up the opening-rope. To dump the raised load, the barrel a is held by a brake, and the pawl f over runs the ratchet to permit the drum c to pay out without disengagement of the clutch.
