Abstract

A spinning bath for use in the manufacture of artificial threads, films, &c. from viscose, consists of an aqueous solution of the acids obtained by sulphonating the condensation products prepared by reacting with phenols on aldehydes and ketones, especially ketoses, aldoses and more especially the various carbohydrates. The bath may also contain mineral acids or the salts of mineral acids and the soluble salts of the sulphonated acids. With these baths, satisfactory results are obtained even with entirely unripened viscose. In an example, a bath for use in making threads of about 2 deniers contains 10 per cent sulphuric acid, 8 per cent Neradol D, and 10 per cent sodium sulphate; the bath is maintained at 18 DEG C., and a spinning length of 40 centimetres with a normal speed of drawing, is employed.
