Abstract

Helical springs. - Relates to spring suspensions for motor vehicles &c. in which the load is supported by toggle &c. levers acted on by springs in such a manner that increase or decrease of the load causes a decrease or increase in the leverage for compressing the springs. According to the invention, rollers, &c., carried by the toggle levers move between two surfaces one or both of which are pressed against the rollers &c. by one or more springs. The invention is also applicable generally as a shock. absorbing device. As shown in Fig. 1, the toggle levers 9, 9a pivoted on a plunger 7<a> secured to the vehicle frame carry rollers 10, 10<a> and 11, 11<a> which move between links 5, 6, and 7, 8, pivotally mounted at 3, 4 in a casing 2 secured to the axle 1, the links being held in contact with the rollers by springs 12, 13, 13a. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the casing 12 is secured to the vehicle frame and the plunger 25 bears on the axle. The plunger 25, which is guided in the casing 14 by a flanged sleeve 30 and depending rod 31, carries at its upper end arms 27 to which are pivoted the toggle levers 28 at the outer ends of which are mounted rollers 29 engaging between fixed inclined surfaces 14<a> and links 19 pivoted to the casing at 18. The springs 22 bear against a central perforated member 23 and against seatings 21 having a ball and socket connection 20 with the lower ends of the links 19. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the links 19 are controlled by a single spring 48 which passes through the bifurcated end 39 of the plunger, while in a further modification two such springs are arranged in parallel, the plunger passing between them.
