Planes, construction of; steering and balancing.-Aircraft wings have indeformable front portions a, rigidly secured to the fuselage, and rear portions formed of upper and lower flexible members b<1>, b<2> connected to ribs c which are hinged to the portions a at c', so that the camber of the wings increases as the incidence is increased. There may be flexible trailing edges g deformable by the wind. For steering purposes, the wings on opposite sides of the machine may be separately operated. Springs d may connect the members b<1> to the ribs c. The ribs c may be moved by cams e on shafts f, or, as shown in Fig. 4, they may be actuated by hollow rods i screw-coupled to the front portions a by nuts having drums j around which cords q are wound. The cords q are passed around pulleys i<1> on a shaft m, which can be turned by a wheel o through worm-gear m, for extending or retracting the rods i.
