Abstract

388,226. Retractable undercarriages. GRUMMAN, L. R., 75, Ivy Way, Port Washington, New York, U.S.A. March 23, 1932, No. 8624. [Class 4.] An aeroplane comprises a body having an opening in the side, a collapsable undercarriage having a jointed compression member one end of which carries a wheel, and means acting upon one joint of the compression member to collapse the undercarriage and retract it into the body in such a manner as to cause the wheel to overlie the opening in the body side. A wheel 1 is mounted on an angular axle 2 held at its lower end by a pivoted yoke 3 and at its upper end by a similar yoke 4 pivoted to the body inwardly of and above the pivot of yoke 3. Movement of the wheel in its extended position is restrained by a compression strut having a lower portion 5 and an upper portion 6 pivoted together by an offset pivot 16. The upper portion 6 is formed as a yoke and pivoted to spaced transverse bulkheads as are the members 3, 4. Fixed to the upper end of part 6 is a pulley or similar device 10 which may be rotated by cables 11 from a winch or similar means within reach of the pilot. Clockwise rotation of the pulley when the strut is in the position shown at the right of Fig. 1 causes the hinge 16 to break inwardly, continued rotation causing the wheel to assume the position shown in the left side of the Figure. Reversed rotation of the pulley 10 would cause the wheel and strut to resume their original position. The strut part 5 may incorporate a hydraulic shock absorber.
