Abstract

Chenille.-In making feather yarn, feathers are fed so that their quill parts enter from the front of the apparatus shown between a pair of separated rotating cutters 3 coacting with a geared rotary member 6, the severed barb parts of the feathers being caught between pairs of rubber-covered rollers 5, 7 and between pairs of threads from spools 13, 13<1>. The free ends of the pairs of threads are secured to bobbins 19 mounted on a carriage 18. While the rollers are rotating to feed the severed barbs and the yarns, the carriage 18 is moved rearwards by a chain 22 secured at its ends thereto and passing around a wheel 25 on the front part of the apparatus and around wheels 11, 21, the bobbins 19 being rotated, to twist the yarns, by a guided rope 23 driven by a pulley 9 on the shaft 2, which is driven by a pulley 10 and is geared to the shaft 1. When the carriage reaches the end of its travel, the machine is stopped, and, on pulling one side of a rope 24, a pivoted frame 17 on the carriage 18 is tilted to guide the twisted feather yarn on to the bobbins 19. The carriage is then driven forwards by pulling the rope as a whole, and the bobbins are rotated to wind the yarn, the pulley 9 being rotated by the chain. The sequence, of operations is then repeated.
