Abstract

179,935. Corset, L. A. M. May 10, 1921, [Convention date]. Cutting shaped holes in plates.-Machines for cutting shaped holes in plates by punching over. lapping holes as described in Figs. 1 and 2 of Specification 168,334 are modified in details. The actuating cam on the spindle 6 coacts with a correspondingly formed surface on a bush 7 connected to the punch-holder 2 by a pin 14 that is carried by a key 12 that prevents rotation of the holder in the frame and is further secured to the holder by a pin 13. The pin 14 is shaped to engage a lifting cam 15 secured to the spindle 6. The bush 8 for adjusting the position of the stroke is provided with a hand-wheel nut 17 well clear of the driving pulley and engages the frame, or a member 16 secured to it, by a quick-pitch thread. The adjusted position is determined by a pin 20, that may be provided with a handle, placed in a selected hole 19 in the hand-wheel, and located against a buffer spring secured to the frame. By turning the wheel until the pin contacts with the other side of the frame, the punch is raised clear of the work and attached templet without stopping the machine. The die-holder is provided with a triangular flange for adjustment on its spherical seating by vertically-arranged screws 18. The gauge-pin is operated by a bell-crank lever 44 and eccentric 51 splined on the spindle 6. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the holder 39 for the gauge pin 10 is grooved vertically to engage pins carried directly by the bell-crank lever 44, and that the safety spring 40 bears directly on the pins. In a modification the eccentric is replaced by an annular cam connected to the gauge-pin by a pivoted or reciprocating U-shaped member corresponding to the gap of the machine frame. " In the case of the cutting out of tubes or ferrules, the vertical spindle carrier may be replaced by a simple flat spring placed horizontally to the lower part of the frame." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
