Abstract

179,885. Steinhilber, H. May 13, 1921, [Convention date]. Pulp, preparation of.-In a process for the production of cellulose from reeds and similar lignified plants, including papyrus, without the employment of chemicals, the materials, cut into small pieces, and preferably after steaming, are passed between crushing-rollers or treated in edge rollers or other suitable machines to deform the parenchym cells, which may, if desired, be removed by washing with water. A further mechanical rubbing or frictional action, applied in the presence of water by rag machines or stuff engines set to avoid cutting, produces a pulp from which the incrusting substances may be removed by washing, leaving pure cellulose fibre.
