Abstract
Cellulose fibres from decorticated plant leaves and/or husks and/or stalks, e.g. abaca, coir, flax, manila hemp, henequen, jute, kenaf, ramie, sisal or sunn, are partially disintegrated into their component fibrils by a chemical treatment such as bleaching, e.g. with an optical bleach, and/or dyeing, and after drying, are subjected to a mechanical beating treatment which curls the fibres and further or wholly disintegrates them into fibrils prior to their formation into a filter rod. Prior to chemical and/or mechanical treatment the fibres may be combed and/or beaten to partially longitudinally split them, e.g. they may be teased between spiked cylinders. One or more cutting operations may be performed on the fibres prior to chemical and/or mechanical treatment, e.g. for a cigarette filter rod the fibres may be initially cut to a length of one to six inches. The chemical treatment may be such as to reduce the fibres to from 60% to 95% of their original weight. Machine-dried sisal may be chemically treated by boiling in caustic soda followed by boiling in acidified sodium chlorite and machine or natural drying. The mechanical treatment may be effected by rotating hammers from which the fibres are passed by an air stream through perforated screens, fibre "dust" then being removed by sieving if required. Filter rod formation may be effected by wrapping a layer of fibres with cigarette paper as it passes on a conveyer through a garniture. The rod fibres and/or fibrils may be bonded together, and possibly to the wrapper, by thermosetting and/or thermoplastic materials. Powdered polythene may be added before rod formation, the formed rod being heated to flux the polythene and cooled. A solution or emulsion of bonding agent may be used, e.g. the fibres may be immersed in or sprayed with polystyrene before rod formation, the formed rod being heated to remove liquid. A wrapper may be dispensed with if a bonding agent is used. Compression of a fibre mass from which a rod is to be formed, before or after addition of bonding agent, or compression of the formed rod before completion of the bonding action, may be effected. Alternatively, the fibre mass may be mechanically expanded prior to rod formation. The Registered Trade Mark "Tinopal" is referred to.
