Abstract

Retting.-In degumming and preparing textile fibres such as jute, ramie, and flax, the material is treated with chemicals, steamed, and washed, whilst in an open condition, and without handling. The chemical solutions and the wash-water are circulated through the material in a kier or vessel i, Fig. 1, having a removable frame h, Fig. 3, containing a number of chests b spaced apart one above the other by distance pieces c, each chest communicating with a central supply pipe or conduit carried on the frame and having a number of outlet apertures on its lower side. Trays a, having perforated bottoms, are supported between the chests so that the steam or fluid from the chests is directed downwards on to the material in the trays. Chemicals, steam, and wash-water are supplied at the inlet e, which may be connected by flexible tubing to the pipe d. A pressure gauge may be provided at m, and a vacuum gauge at n. The upper and lower plates of the chests b may be strengthened by stays f, Fig. 7.
